Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic:
Royal Delta pours it on late
Royal Delta staked her claim to the Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old filly by outrunning fellow fillies It’s Tricky and Plum Pretty, plus six older rivals, when capturing the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic under the lights on Friday night at Churchill Downs.
The Ladies’ Classic was the last of six Breeders’ Cup races to be run on Friday. There are nine more Saturday, highlighted by the richest of the 15 races, the $5 million Classic.
The win was the fourth in the Ladies’ Classic – once known as the Distaff — for trainer Bill Mott, the winningest trainer of all-time at Churchill Downs. But, as with his win last year with Unrivaled Belle, this one was bittersweet.
Last year’s victory was largely overshadowed by the controversy of whether Life At Ten should have run in the race. As a result, Unrivaled Belle never got her due.
This year’s win was poignant in that it came for Palides Investments, the stable name of Prince Saud bin Khaled of Saudi Arabia, who died earlier this year and whose equine holdings will be dispersed in the coming days.

Unlike the colts division winning 2 of the 3 runnings over the Euros, US fillies have all three running of this event , so lets start there. Somali Lemonade has been the most impressive of the US contingent winning her two races from last to first with a dynamic rush through the stretch on les than firm courses ( gd and yld), and the most recent win was in the Jessamine Stakes at Keeneland, a sand based course like the one here at CD. She is trained by Michael Matz of Barbaro fame and ridden by veteran Alex Solis. Pure Gossip , the NY bred winner of the Miss Grillo on a soft turf came from a stalking position in her lone turf try.Stephanie’s Kitten could be a real player in here as well . She broke her maiden At AP on the turf then was 3rd by 3 ¼ in the Natalma before she won the Alcibiades on the synthetic.. Northern Passion comes in from Canada and is 2of 3 and won her only turf try in the one turn mile Natalma, while beatingDayatthespa and Stephanie’s Kitten. She comes from mid pack to back but has never been on giving ground.
The most formidable of the Euros is Elusive Kate. Undefeated since running 4th in her initial outing, she has a gr3 and gr 1 to her credit. In her last out, a straight one mile event she bore badly to the left but managed to hang for the win. She runs close to the pace but should stalk over here.
