Dr Oz:

Thyroid Cancer: Fastest Growing Cancer in Women

Doctor Oz did an episode of the Dr Oz Show on Thyroid Cancer, which is the fastest growing cancer in women.

Thyoid Cancer preys on your throat silently for years before you catch it, but with Dr Oz’s Thyroid Cancer Self Exam, you can detect it

before it is too late.  45,000 new cases of Thyroid Cancer are expected this year in America, and 3 out of 4 of these cases will be a woman.

We are now twice as likely to get this cancer as we were in 1990.  Dr Oz was joined by Dr. Carolyn Runowicz and Dr. James Lee,

the director of the NY Thyroid Center, to discuss Thyroid Cancer.

Carolyn Runowicz told Dr Oz that there is an increase in women getting Thyroid Cancer, and the scary thing is that this cancer usually starts

around the age of 30-60 years old, which is when a woman is having her period.  There are estrogen receptors on your thyroid, so this might be a clue

as to why women who are still menstruating are more likely to get Thyroid Cancer.  Dr James Lee said that we are getting better at detecting

this cancer faster and sooner, and the good news is that 80% of Thyroid Cancer is picked up in stage 1 and is mainly curable at this stage.

Your thyroid secretes a hormone that effects your metabolism, heart beat, body temperature and lots of basic functions of your body.  A thyroid tumor can cause

problems swallowing and you can sometimes see it bulging out of your neck.  Dr Oz showed an example of a healthy thyroid with a windpipe that is flexible,

which means that it can get crushed if you develop a tumor on your thyroid.  Your thyroid is located underneath your Adam’s Apple and should feel mushy and soft,

like other normal tissue.  Then Dr Oz showed a thyroid that had cancer to show how the thyroid tissue is soft but the tumor is hard like a rock and will look

like a big lump growing out of your neck.

Thyroid Cancer Symptoms

Dr James Lee said that typically people discover they could have thyroid cancer by going

to a physician for a physical exam or when they look in the mirror.

Sometimes it is also found as a thyroid nodule during an ultrasound.

But here are some other symptoms of Thyroid Cancer that Dr Oz gave:

– Difficulty Swallowing or Breathing (it can feel like you are breathing through a straw)

– Hoarseness

– Lingering Cough Unrelated to a Cold

– Pain or Lump in Neck

– Swelling or Fullness in Neck

Thyroid Cancer Risk Factors

The two biggest risk factors for Thyroid Cancer are:

– Large doses of radiation therapy, especially as a child.

– Genetics – if your parents or sibling have had Thyroid Cancer

Dr Oz said that people who have more than 5 x-rays per year (even x-rays at your Dentist Office)

have a four times greater risk of developing Thyroid Cancer.

Runowicz is a Breast Cancer Survivor and said that when you  have breast cancer, one treatment is to remove the lump and then to receive radiation therapy.

The problem, of course, is that radiation scatters to other parts of your body as well, so she is now very cautious about further exposure to radiation.

You should always ask you doctor why you need to get x-rays, and if it is just to check your teeth for example, Dr Runowicz would not get the x-rays personally.

If you do get x-rays, make sure to insist on not just a Lead Apron but a Thyroid Guard Lead Apron that covers your neck and

thyroid to protect yourself.  Dr Oz said that he would also recommend using these Thryoid Guard Lead Aprons when getting a mammogram.

I have never seen a Thyroid Guard whenever I have had an x-ray, but I will be sure to insist on it going forward!

QUEST FOR A CURE

Hi all,

I wanted to share with you that the FDA announced it WILL grant Genentech a hearing to allow the company to present its views on

why Avastin should remain FDA-approved for metastatic breast cancer. The FDA has scheduled the hearing for June 28-29, 2011.

The hearing will be open to the public, though information about the location of the hearing is not yet available. Some of you have asked if you can

speak at the hearing. According to the FDA’s letter, interested parties will not be permitted to make oral presentations during the hearing, but may submit

comments in writing to the public docket on www.regulations.gov.

The FDA’s letter notifying Genentech the hearing has been granted is available on the following link and includes additional

F.D.A. Grants Hearing on Avastin

as

Treatment for Breast Cancer

By ANDREW POLLACK

The Food and Drug Administration has granted a hearing for Genentech to argue in favor of preserving

the approval of its drug Avastin as a treatment for breast cancer.

The hearing will take place June 28-29, the F.D.A. said in a letter

to Genentech’s lawyer and to a lawyer for the F.D.A.

The F.D.A. announced in December that it planned to revoke the approval

of Avastin for breast cancer because new studies

did not show the drug was helping women live longer or to delay

the progression of their cancers very long, while at the same

time exposing them to dangerous side effects. The decision has split the breast cancer community.

While Genentech, a subsidiary of Roche, will get its day in court, so to speak, it will not get the jury it wanted.

The hearing will be in front of the F.D.A.’s Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee. That committee voted

12 to 1 last July that the approval of Avastin for breast cancer should be withdrawn.

In its request for the hearing, Genentech argued that the committee did not have enough breast cancer specialists and therefore could not properly evaluate the importance of Avastin for that disease.

But in her letter to the company’s lawyer, Dr. Karen Midthun, the F.D.A. officer who will oversee the hearing, said she would not add breast cancer experts to the committee. “We must face the reality,’’ she wrote, “that many experts in this area have already expressed a view on this issue and/or might be considered as having conflicts because of their association with one of the parties to the hearing or competitors to Genentech.’’

The letter sets out other ground rules. The first day of the hearing will be devoted to presentations by witnesses chosen by Genentech and by the F.D.A.’s drug division, with each side given equal time. On the second day, the advisory committee will make recommendations.

Members of the public can submit written testimony but will not be allowed to speak at the meeting. The ultimate decision will be made by the F.D.A. commissioner, Dr. Margaret Hamburg.

FDA Grants Genentech

a Hearing on Avastin’s

Use for Metastatic Breast Cancer

in the United States

Genentech, a member of the Roche Group (SIX: RO, ROG; OTCQX: RHHBY), today announced the

U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted a hearing to allow the company the opportunity to present its views on

why Avastin® (bevacizumab) should remain FDA-approved for metastatic breast cancer (mBC). The FDA has scheduled

the hearing for June 28 to 29, 2011. Currently, and until the conclusion of the proceedings with the FDA, Avastin remains

approved for use in combination with paclitaxel for the first-line treatment of HER2-negative mBC in the United States.

“We appreciate the opportunity to continue our discussion with the FDA during a public hearing about the use of

Avastin in metastatic breast cancer,” said Hal Barron, M.D., chief medical officer and head, Global Product Development.

“We believe Avastin is an important option for women with this disease and should remain an FDA-approved choice.”

The FDA’s letter notifying Genentech the hearing has been granted is available on http://www.regulations.gov

under Docket No. FDA-2010-N-0621. On January 18, 2011, Genentech submitted its response to the FDA’s

Notice of Opportunity for a Hearing (“NOOH”) on the Agency’s proposal to withdraw approval of the mBC indication.

The response set forth the Avastin data, analyses and information that Genentech will review with the FDA at the hearing.

The company’s response and supporting documentation are available on

Genentech’s website at

http://www.gene.com/gene/news/news-events/avastin/ or on http://www.regulations.gov under Docket No. FDA-2010-N-0621.
