GET READY FOR FEBRUARY…

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR

LITTLE RED DRESS!

= e /]

Although it doesn’t take place on National Wear Red Day,

the New York Fashion Week 2017

will include a special show with 19 celebrities modeling red outfits

on February 9. The event is presented by Macy’s.

Last year’s red dress fashion show featured 20 celebrities,

including Candace Cameron Bure, Olivia Culpo, Tamron Hall,

Vanna White, the late Florence Henderson and Fran Drescher.

According to Go Red For Women, Macy’s

has helped raise $46 million over the past decade for the cause.

February 5 is the day that the American Heart Association asks everyone to wear red in order to raise awareness for heart disease in women. Created in 2004, Go RED day was designed to promote healthier lives for women of all ages.

Today 1 in 3 women are affected by heart disease in the United States, and nearly 44 million American women are living with heart disease. Even though cardiovascular disease is quite prevalent in women, only 1 in 5 women are aware that heart disease is their greatest health risk.

While we have made great strides in reducing cardiovascular death rates in women over the last 20 years, we still must continue to educate and advocate for women of all ages—this advocacy begins with dispelling the common myths surrounding heart disease in general. It is my hope that through efforts such as the Go Red campaign, we can promote better heart health for millions of American women. Ultimately, we must engage women and their families in order to most effectively eliminate needless cardiac related deaths in the next decade.

Myth 1: Heart Disease is predominantly a disease of men
The truth: More women than men die of heart disease every single year. Heart disease kills more women than all types of cancer combined. While most women believe that their greatest health risk comes from breast or uterine cancer—in actuality, a woman’s greatest health risk is from heart disease and stroke. Nearly 90 percent of all women have at least one risk factor for heart disease.

Myth 2: Heart Disease affects men and women in the same way

The truth: Heart disease affects men and women differently. Biologic and hormonal differences in men and women contribute to the ways in which heart disease develops and progresses. Studies have shown that after menopause, women have an even higher risk for heart disease—estrogens seem to promote better cholesterol profiles.

Women tend to present to a healthcare provider far later in the course of the disease and have more diffuse blockages in their heart (coronary) arteries. These blockages in coronary arteries result in heart attacks. Heart attacks have several commonly recognized symptoms. Men tend to have more typical symptoms like crushing chest pain and associated shortness of breath, nausea, radiation of pain to neck or jaw.

Women, in contrast, may have very atypical symptoms and some women have no symptoms at all. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly two-thirds of women who have sudden cardiac death due to heart disease have no symptoms. While women may certainly have the same symptoms as men, it is more common for them to present with more vague and non-specific symptoms such as feelings of dread, anxiety, back pain and flu-like symptoms.

Heart attacks appear to be much more severe and carry a higher risk for death and complications in women as compared to men. For example, in the first year following a heart attack women are 40 percent more likely to die than men. In the six years following a heart attack, women are twice as likely to have a second event as compared to men with similar disease.

Myth 3: Women with heart disease are treated the same as men

The truth: Women with heart disease are under-treated and underserved. Women are not screened for and diagnosed with heart disease as aggressively as men. Many times women are sent home from the hospital with atypical symptoms only to find out later that they had suffered a heart attack. When women are diagnosed with heart disease, they are less likely to be treated with the most advanced and aggressive therapies. Men are more likely to undergo cardiac catheterization or coronary artery bypass operations to restore blood flow to the heart after a blockage occurs. Women are more likely to have both minor and major complications from invasive procedures but, in many cases, women seem to see a greater benefit as compared to men. After suffering a heart attack and being treated in the hospital, women are far less likely to be referred for cardiac rehabilitation and are also less likely to be placed on important medications that have been shown to prevent future events.

MYTH 4: It can’t happen to me

The truth: Heart disease does not discriminate. The risk factors for heart disease are the same in both men and women:

–Smoking

–Diabetes

–High Cholesterol

–High Blood Pressure

–Family History of Heart Disease

–Obesity

Nearly 80 percent of all women have at least one risk factor for heart disease. More importantly, many of these risk factors are modifiable. While breast cancer affects 1in 8 women, heart disease affects one in three. Chronic heart disease and suffering a heart attack can result in physical limitation, significant decrease in quality of life, depression and ultimately heart failure.

SO, WHAT CAN WOMEN DO?

Women must take control of their own health.

The first step in preventing heart disease-related deaths in American women is engagement. Every woman must know her risk for heart disease. It is essential that women partner with their physician or other healthcare provider in order to assess their health status and identify at risk behaviors or other high risk conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

You must be able to connect and effectively communicate with your healthcare provider in order to work together to reduce risk. Ask questions and never accept an answer or an opinion from a medical professional that does not adequately address your concerns.

Women must advocate for themselves and each other (family, friends, etc.) in order to improve awareness of the risks for heart disease in women.

For women with heart disease—tell your story to others. Make sure that all of the women in your life are aware of the risks and help them get the care they desperately need.

FALL TRENDS 2016!

Screen Shot 2016-08-09 at 10.28.59 PM

From the Runway to your Closet…

I like to stay with a solid color theme under the plaid topcoat.

You can mix it up if you’d like,…especially if your going with jeans..

.but for a slimming stylish look,..all one color underneath looks great!

Screen Shot 2016-08-09 at 10.28.44 PM

From the Runway to your Closet…

This is an interesting up to date look,..but not always easy to pull off.

Your dress needs to be roomy enough so it doesn’t pull

with the added layer the turtleneck presents.

But it’s a great way to transition from summer to fall.

I like it with a bootie and tights to balance the added weight of the turtleneck.

I like it with a dark sheer hose and strappy shoe

I’m not a big fan of these two colors together

but you’ll be seeing alot of these two together this fall.

Screen Shot 2016-09-06 at 2.53.26 PM

I love pink with grey’s, off whites and browns…

Screen Shot 2016-09-06 at 3.01.47 PM

An oversized pink sweater with white jeans (yes even in fall/winter) looks great…

Just wear with a neutral or grey boot or vintage sneaker.  A grey jean or pink on pink looks great too!

From the Runway to your Closet…

I love this look …shows off your sexy shoulders but can hide those little areas of the upper arm that gets a bit flabby with age.

Just needs to be paired with a fitted bottom…or skinny jean.

Keeps attention on your beautiful shoulders!

From the Runway to your Closet…

I love velvet…especially during the holidays…

But if you’re going to pull this look off this fall

my suggestion is to limit your velvet choices…

too much of a good thing can be a bit much at times.

I love velvet jeans with oversized sweaters.

But if you do feel the need to make a velvet statement…

the velvet suit is a gorgeous option…

and velvet dresses for evening are fabulous!

—Choose based on whether you’re wearing casual or formal attire.

—Elegant evening wear works best with glamorous pieces

that feature pearls, diamonds and ivory beads.

—-Bridal wear  is also similarly suited to those kinds of pieces.

—Fabric and crocheted  chokers work best with casual Bohemian styles.

—Chokers that are simple strands, featuring beadwork or other embellishments,

can look great with both casual and formal wear.

–A strapless formal gown can be made even more elegant

with a delicate choker featuring translucent glass beads, crystals and gems.

MORE FALL/WINTER FASHION TRENDS!

Animal Prints are always fun…

but in my opinion look best when added in touches …a little goes a long way.  I like to add an animal print handbag or shoe…or an animal print jacket or scarf.   Jeans are great too…but I like them with a solid top..and the same goes if you wear an animal print top…solid bottom.

5 WAYS TO WEAR OVER THE KNEE BOOTS…

You’ve already received the memo on the 10 most-wanted boots for fall—and over-the-knee (or knee-high) boots are at the top of the list. While ultra-tall boots may seem a bit daunting, finding the right height and proportion will guarantee they’re flattering (not to mention a worthwhile investment). Find your perfect pair of boots to wear for work and play in our list of favorites ahead.

But first you may want to read this guide which is designed to help women pull off the over-the-knee boot look with class and style. This will happen by offering some basic tips on dressing with OTKs in mind. Then, 5 ways to wear over-the-knee boots will be discussed as a means to get the creative fashion juices flowing. Finally, buying tips will help women get the inside track on the piece they need to finish it all off: over-the-knee boots.

Dressing with Over-the-Knee Boots: Keep It Classy
Before getting into specific looks, it is important to review a few dos and don’ts when it comes to dressing with OTK boots in general. Remember, this look, no matter how masterfully pulled off, still has a strong association with loose morals and risque activities. Therefore, ground rules for decorum are essential.

The challenge of dressing with over-the-knee boots is trying to balance the perception of this fashion piece with the overall outfit. There is a reason that this look is so hot and it has to do with balance. Though there are plenty of people, celebrities included, who seem to have missed the message about the whole short skirt and revealing outfit thing, there’s no reason to fall into that trap when you wear over-the-knee boots. In fact, correctly paired, OTKs can be worn to a causal office and in many other settings that are more traditionally considered modest.

Once buyers understand the basic idea of properly pulling off the over-the-knee boot, there are some additional options that they have in terms of specific looks for OTKs. Each of these involves taking the basic ground rules from the previous section and using them to pair boots with the proper clothing pieces. Depending on the environment in which they will be worn, consider the following 5 ways to wear over-the-knee boots.

Style 1: Over-the-Knee Boots with Jeans
A favorite look for many women who want to marry the haute couture style of over-the-knee boots with a more casual look is to pair OTKs with jeans. This is a great option since the jeans ensure coverage and a (relatively) loose fit as compared to some other options. However, in order to make this look work, the jeans in question will need to be skinny jeans or else buyers will need to opt for a wider over-the-knee boot which may not wear as well with some of the other fashion options. For an added element of sophistication, consider pairing jeans with a crisp white or light-colored dress shirt.

Style 2: Over-the-Knee Boots with Leggings
A more popular choice is to wear over-the-knee boots with leggings, which are also a really hot fashion item. Leggings, by their very nature, hug the legs and make the fitting of OTKs pretty easy. However, in order to dial down the provocative nature of the over-the-knee look, it’s important to pair leggings with a loose-fitting top, like a sweater. This serves the dual purpose of creating modesty on top and adding a bit of warmth to the look and feel of the ensemble.

Style 3: Over-the-Knee Boots with Thigh-Length Skirts and Panty Hose
A more daring and formal option is to pair over-the-knee boots with a thigh-length skirt and panty hose. Since panty hose are slippery, even tight fitting OTKs will work great with them. The thigh – length skirt is also a happy middle ground between style and sexy. It will cover the legs while also showcasing the beauty of the boots. Make sure that the skirt is loose fitting, however, in order to control the silhouette and prevent negative associations with the look.

Style 4: Over-the-Knee Boots with Shorts and Stockings
For those who are really into the fashion scene, pairing over-the-knee boots with dress shorts and opaque stockings can really add punch to an outfit. The addition of the stockings is essential if buyers are to avoid showing too much skin. Also, this look is a bit more edgy, so it can be hard to pull off without the right accessories. Remember to keep the top more modest, opting for a dress T – shirt and flowy cardigan or dress shirt like the one described in Style 1.

Style 5: Over-the-Knee Boots with Longer Skirts and Dresses
Women who are wary of showing too much skin with a skirt or shorts may want to opt for another, more subtle way to highlight over-the-knee boots by pairing them with a long slitted skirt or dress. This option will keep the majority of the legs covered while allowing the teasing look of OTKs to show on occasion and add a bit of style.

Buying Over-the-Knee Boots
Achieving a great look with over-the-knee boots is an exercise in balance and savvy. In order to achieve that, however, the first and most important step is finding a great pair of over – the – knee boots. Since this type of footwear took the fashion world by storm in 2009, they have become more and more prevalent among typical merchants and shoe stores. However, since OTKs tend to be a pricier option as compared to knee – high and mid – calf boots, they are more likely found in higher end department stores and designer shoe shops.

OUR TOP 5 SPRING FORWARD WARDROBE TIPS!

As the weather gets a bit warmer…(hopefully)  and your winter wardrobe is beginning to feel a bit drab and worn out …it’s time to start thinking Spring Forward!  With these hopeful thoughts in mind…here are a few hints to give you and your personal style a push in the right directions! 1.  Start adding a bit of spring color to your wardrobe.  From light pastels to vibrant colors now is the time to add that bit of color to your style.  If your stuck in the browns and blacks mode…yes you can add these colors  to your look,…but try to be a bit adventurous and bring out your white jeans with brightly colored tops and tone them down with your black or brown blazer or sweater and keep the outfit transitional with spring boots…I love the new light colored suede booties.  Greys also look great this time of year with whites and pastels.  And navy is always a great transitional color with whites, khaki’s, off whites,…and I love adding coral or bright pink or yellow with navy tops or scarves to finish the look! 2.  Update your handbag to a more transitional piece…I know it’s easy to just grab that black bag…but this time of year calls out color and shine!…Bright colored handbags add just the right amount of color to update your look.  And the new gold and silver hued bags are  a great investment that can go right in to the summer to fall!  If you really want to have fun try out the new back packs or cross over bags….they are not only very trendy now, but great on your back! 3.  Geometric Prints are everywhere now.  From head to toe dresses to shoes and handbags.  These prints look great this time of year and yes you can update your your basic blacks with these prints and head right on in to spring.  Check out Clover Caynon,  Tibi,  Milly and Mara Hoffman,…and the pricey but beautiful Etro. 4.  White with Black.  Another easy way to update your winter wardrobe in to spring is to add white and black pieces to your basic black look.  From the fun white and black prints on shoes and handbags to flowy tops and and scarves.  These two colors are always a must in your Personal Wardrobe! 5.  Lady like dresses are showing up everywhere…but our favorite item to add this time of year is the soft flowy wide legged jumpsuit!  It looks great on everyone and can be worn casual with a blazer or dressed  up with bold jewelry and heels.  Black is always flattering, but try to be adventurous and try out some of the new updated colors and prints!

Just remember…you are the star…not the trend…have fun and let your Personal Style be your guide!

Spring 2014 Fashion Trend: Boxy, Cropped (Non-Moto) Jackets

Yes, your fall wardrobe-staple moto jacket will still serve you well in the spring, but think about adding one of these non-moto jackets to your layering arsenal. The boxy, cropped silhouette can come in a plethora of prints and textures to pair easily with a fit-and-flare or body-con dress, tailored trousers, office-ready skirts, and (of course) your go-to jeans. Spring 2014 Fashion Trend: Contrast-Collar Button-Downs

Spring 2014 Trends Straight from the Runways: Cool Bomber Jackets

The sporty layering pieces get edgier for spring with adventurously colorful prints, luxe textures and fabrics, and sporty-cool detailing—like mesh weaving and perforations. Like its cousin the moto jacket, the bomber is ultra versatile to temper the girliness of a dress or complement the athletic chicness of dressy shorts.

Spring 2014 Fashion Trend: Tea-Length Skirts

While the midiskirt may be the ultimate transition piece, the tea-length—between midi and maxi (yes, it’s starting to get thatspecific)—is it for spring. The ladylike hemline can be just as modern as a mini; pair it with a cropped top to offset the length (and make you look taller!). Of course, you could also get the look with a breezy tea-length dress, but keep it modern and sexy by baring some arm

(and maybe a little shoulder).

Spring 2014 Fashion Trend: Sweater Dressing

Along with the not-going-anywhere crop top, spring knits make for next season’s staple separate. Whether it’s boldly printed or inventively cut, the seasonal sweater is an easy-chic piece to pair with tailored pants, flirty skirts, and blousy shorts—or to just throw on over a light dress.

1. Wear a simple, elegant updo, like a sleek, polished ponytail.

Hint: Keep frizz and flyaways under control with a lightweight shine serum. Our favorite? Citré Shine’s Anti-Frizz Spray Laminator. ($3.99; Drugstore.com)

2. Luminous skin is your best accessory.

Hint: Sweep highlighting powder in soft pink (like Benefit’s Powderflage) under your eyes and along cheekbones to brighten your face. ($28; BenefitCosmetics.com)

3. When in doubt, wear black.

It always looks chic. Hint: Wear an eye-catching black top like this one from The Limited. It has sophisticated detail at the neck, plus a touch of shine. ($49.50; TheLimited.com)

4. Be festive—paint your nails red.

Hint: Apply a base coat first to prevent the deep color from staining nails.

5. Wear a statement ring to dress up a party look.

Hint: We love Fred Flare’s Jumbo Cocktail Rings set. It has six rings in different jewel tones, so you can match any outfit. ($22; FredFlare.com)

6. Less is more.

Hint: Pick the feature you want to play up (eyes or lips) and keep the rest of your look simple.

7. Flashy, fun jewels add excitement to any plain top or dress.

Hint: Stick with a common theme when wearing jewelry. Here, jewel tones unite these silver and gold baubles.

8. Don’t be afraid to show off legs and arms.

Hint: Apply a body lotion with a bit of shimmer to décolletage, arms and legs for some exciting sparkle.

9. Go bold and wear showstopping earrings.

Hint: Try a pair that catches the light. We love these beaded chandelier earrings from Target. ($7.99; Target.com)

10. Keep brows well groomed—they’re the frame for your face.

Hint: In a pinch, Aquaphor (ointment for chapped skin) can be used to keep eyebrows in line. ($5.49; at drugstores)

10 Fashion Rules You Can Break

No long hair-or short skirts-after 40?

No white after Labor Day?

No, thank you!

You can revise how you perceive fashion and still look great. Here’s how.

RULE #10: If It Doesn’t Fit, You Must Acquit

You might love something, but if it doesn’t fit right, put it right back on the rack. Such a tough rule when true love — of the shopping variety — is so hard to find. REVISE It’s a question of flattery, not fit. The right fit is usually within your grasp — yours and a skillful tailor’s. “Tailors are the most important thing in fashion,” says Swennen. “Don’t necessarily rule out something you love. Just know that you may need to tweak it to work for you.” The only time to turn away from a look you love is if it doesn’t look good on you even when the fit is perfect. “You have to respect your body type and make sure something is going to work with your shape,” says Swennen. “I wouldn’t wear a skinny jean, because it doesn’t look great on me.” When you do love what you see in the mirror, and it looks both appropriate and alluring, that’s what you should be wearing, even if it’s not the latest trend. “The key to personal style is understanding your individual beauty enough to know which looks will work for you and which probably won’t,” says London. In the end, confidence is the greatest accessory. And that’s one style rule that will never be broken.

RULE #9: Thou Shall Not Wear Red Lipstick by Day

For the last few decades, lips have been painted a subtle nude, and dramatic makeup has been saved for evening-even if nude lipstick makes you look like you’ve spent too long swimming in a frigid lake. REVISE You can wear red lipstick — or black eyeliner — by day. You just can’t wear both at once. “Red lipstick is a wake-up for your face,” says Falik. “It’s a great way to distract from your eyes if you haven’t gotten a good night’s sleep.” You just want to make sure that it doesn’t look like it’s been left on from the night before. “Keep the rest of your makeup minimal, so it doesn’t look like you’re dressed for an evening out,” warns Falik. Similarly, if you favor defined eyeliner, keep your lipstick and other eye makeup more natural by day.

RULE #8: Thou Shall Not Mix Metals

Another credo that belongs to a simpler, more stifling time and place specifies that when it comes to jewelry, gold goes with gold, silver with silver and bronze with bronze. But if this were true, then why does Cartier’s trinity ring look so good? REVISE Blend your bling. “All metallics are neutrals,” says London. “So it is absolutely fine to mix gold and silver, you just want it to look like it has purpose.” To that end, Falik recommends, “keep it in odd numbers; if you’re going to layer necklaces, do three; if you’re doing a gold cuff with a silver, make sure you have an extra gold or silver, too, so it doesn’t look like you’re trying to balance.” The uneven groupings create a more eclectic, modern style.

RULE #7: Thou Shall Never Pair Open-Toe Shoes With Hosiery

In a dark corner of our brain we all have an image of an old man mowing the lawn in black socks and brown sandals; he is a cautionary tale, not a fashion inspiration. But sometimes we still want to wear our fabulous peep toes with our lovely charcoal tights. REVISE As with so many tricky styles, the elegance is in the execution. “You can wear tights with open-toed shoes, as long as there’s no reinforced toe or even toe seam,” says London. “You need to find tights so it looks like you’re doing it deliberately, not like you forgot you were wearing open-toe shoes. It’s about purpose and deliberation.” And size does matter. “I would recommend keeping the shoe to a peep-toe,” says Swennen. “I wouldn’t suggest tights with a huge open toe sandal.” Or a lawn mower.

RULE #6: Thou Shall Not Wear White After Labor Day

For generations, when September rolled around, white cardigans were wrapped with mothballs, and put away for a long winter’s nap. But white goes with everything and can cast such a flattering glow on your face that it seems unfair to relegate it to one brief season. REVISE Two words: Winter White. You can wear white any time of year, from a chunky knit (or faux-ermine cape) in January to a sleek button-down come Spring. To play it safe, make sure the material you’re wearing is seasonally appropriate. But even that isn’t a hard and fast law, says London. “You could possibly wear a white linen dress in winter if you did it with black tights and boots and a leather jacket. There’s always a way to mix and match things to create a mood that looks season-specific.”

RULE #5: As Thy Age Rises, Thy Hemlines Shall Fall

Once, a lady of a certain age showing leg would be called “mutton dressed as lamb.” And nobody likes mutton. But the length of your skirt should be based on your comfort level, not that of the yackety-yaks around you. REVISE Hot pants are a no-no, but if you can rock a short skirt, do! “Look at Demi Moore and Sharon Stone,” says Koch. “You can wear a shorter dress and a higher heel as you get older, but you want to make sure it’s appropriate; you may want to layer it with a great sweater or a cool jacket,” so that it’s not short below and tight above, for example. Celebrity stylist Tara Swennen, who works with Angie Harmon and Gabrielle Union, says that when it comes to short skirts, “I recommend anywhere from three inches above the knee to right below the knee,” an area that is considered the most flattering as it’s the thinnest part of your leg (besides the ankle). “If you don’t feel comfortable showing leg,” says Swennen, “you can always pair a short skirt with opaque tights.” Koch sometimes layers open-weave fishnets over opaque tights, working the style without risking overexposure.

RULE #4: Thou Shall Stay Out of the Sun

We all tell our dermatologist that little white lie: “I’m going on vacation, but I’ll stay out of the sun.” But we’re not fooling anyone. And we just make it worse if we promise, “I always put on sunscreen right before I walk out the door.” REVISE “Don’t stay out of the sun, just protect your skin in the sun,” advises New York dermatologist Neal Schultz. But don’t do so by putting on sunscreen last. Instead, says Schultz, “you want sunscreen to be the first thing on your skin so that you’re getting the SPF you’ve been promised.” You see, the FDA tests sunscreens on bare — not moisturized or made-up skin. That’s because chemical sunscreens need to react with skin in order to work. Sunscreens can be compromised if applied over moisturizer or other makeup. “It’s like making your bed and realizing you left your pajamas under the sheets so they don’t lie flat,” says Schultz. “You won’t get an even layer of sunscreen if there’s something underneath.”

RULE #3: Thou Shall Not Mix Black and Navy (or Black and Brown)

You know the theory: Pick one neutral and accent it with bright colors, because two basic colors will clash over which is dominant, resulting in your basic wardrobe power struggle. But in a post-Cold War age, can’t we all just get along? Even our navy shift and black jacket? REVISE To get a little existentialist, when it comes to mixing black and navy (or brown), it’s the intention behind the pairing that counts. What does that mean? “You want to wear them in a healthy dose of both colors, so it’s clear you did it on purpose, not like you got dressed in the dark and wore brown shoes with an all-black outfit by accident,” says London. Or, in the words of style expert and host of MSN’s Beauty BFF Jenn Falik, “make sure everything has another anchor; if you’re wearing black with one brown piece, throw in another one.” A brown dress and shoes with black tights and a black belt would be ideal, for example.

RULE #2: Thou Shall Always Match Thy Shoes, Bag, and Belt

We’ve all heard it said by an authority figure, often one looking askance at our sandals: “You can always tell a lady by her coordinated, shoes, belt, and bag.” While that was true once, says Koch, “That time is so over.” Even Jackie Kennedy, who worked the matching hat-and-suit, shoes-and-bag rule to such success in the early ’60s, abandoned the “coordinated set” look for sling-backs and totes large enough to carry the manuscripts she was editing once she was known as Jackie Onassis. REVISE “Matching your hat to your shoe to your bag, or your necklace to your earrings, has a tendency to look dated,” says London. “Mixing up your accessories adds interest to an outfit, and can make you look much more modern and polished.” Your accessories should complement your outfit, not carbon copy it. “If you’re wearing a dress with a really bold print, then your bag and shoes should be solid,” says Koch. Conversely, if you’re wearing a neutral outfit, pick a shoe, bag, or shawl with a print. Look to accessories to modernize things you already have in your wardrobe.

RULE #1: Thou Shall Not Have Long Hair After Age 40

No long hair-or short skirts-after 40? No white after Labor Day? No, thank you! It’s time to stop thinking of fashion in terms of the 10 Commandments, and start thinking in terms of the Golden Rule. As What Not to Wear’s Stacy London puts it, “It’s not about should I wear it, it’s about, does it look flattering on me?” Writer Dominique Browning set off a cyber-firestorm of comments when she wrote about having long locks at 55 in The New York Times, asking “why can’t middle-aged women have long hair?” The only reason anyone could come up with is tradition. “It used to be, once you became a mother you’d have to do the June Cleaver,” says Amy Tara Koch, a Chicago-based style expert and author of the style guide Bump it Up! “It just makes you look so old!” REVISE After 40 you absolutely can wear your hair long, or super short, or whatever style flatters your face. “The problem is when you date yourself with a style or a nonstyle, that actually ages you instead of making you look youthful,” says London. So skip the inch-high hair-sprayed bangs you did in high school; instead, have your stylist layer your long locks into a face-framing shape that’s past your shoulders (provided your hair is strong and lustrous). In fact, says Koch, long hair is sometimes even more flattering as we get older. “A lot of actresses use bangs to cover up wrinkles on their foreheads,” she observes. “Look at Goldie Hawn.”

How to Wear Boots With Dresses & Skirts

yellow dress booties ankle madewell

Yellow dress booties ankle madewellChilly weather is no excuse to give up wearing skirts and dresses

with the season’s best tall bootsankle booties, rain boots (as long as it’s actually raining),

or any boots for that matter.

Get out the tights, the leggings, and the thigh highs; it’s time to flaunt this great look for winter weather.

Read on for some easy pairing tips and lots of super-stylish examples to get you started. More from The Stir: Boots for Wide Calves: You Wanted It, You Got It There aren’t a lot of rules that go along with wearing boots with skirts or dresses.

It’s perfectly acceptable to mix and match lots of dress and skirt lengths with all boot heights.

And that’s good news cause you can’t really mess this look up too badly.

Five basic guidelines: 1. Match your boot style with your dress/skirt style: This is sort of obvious but worth considering — try to keep your dress or skirt in the same style range as your boots. In other words, don’t wear thick chunky motorcycle boots with a party dress or elegant stiletto-heeled boots with a garden dress. 2. Skirt or dress length: When wearing tall knee-high boots, there should be a few inches of “leg peek” between the top of the boot and the hemline. Same goes for long skirts with mid-calf boots, etc. This is more flattering and less nun-like. 3. Bare legs or not: To go bare legged or not is really a preference. When you’re going to work and/or it’s cold outside, most women probably prefer to wear tights or leggings with their skirts and boots. However, when your day is casual and the weather is fair, make the choice that works best for you. 4. Have fun with colored or patterned tights. Playing around with tights in great colors or patterns can add a bit of texture or playfulness to your outfit. This is the only time of year you can strut around in tights, so you might as well go with it — and you’ll stay warmer, too! 5. Lighten up: We’re about to show you some great examples of how to mix and match; however, take care not to drab yourself down with all-dark colors. A black dress atop black tights atop tall black boots is bleck! Too dreary. Lighten up your ensemble with a pale sweater, a colored coat, or tights in a rich color — and don’t be afraid to wear brown boots with black or gray. Here are some great looks that pair boots with dresses or skirts!
