AND THEY’RE OFF!…

Look your Winning Best throughout the Thoroughbred Horse Racing Season 2017!

Next Stops!…

The Preakness, The Belmont…and Royal Ascot!

Well, if you and your hat made it through the cold and rainy Kentucky Derby, it’s now time to start thinking ahead to the next big races that will be coming up over the next few months.  If you will be attending the next two jewels of the Triple Crown your attire can be similar to that of the Derby with the exception of color and possibly a hat.  Pastels are alway popular in Maryland…especially yellow since the Black Eyed Susan is their signature flower.  The weather can be similar to what we saw in Kentucky, so keep an eye on weather reports for the weekend.  As for The Belmont…the attire is usually a little less flashy and a bit more understated, but feel free to continue the celebration of color if you choose.  I sometimes leave my hat at home here…but either choice is acceptable.  And again…check the weather…I remember standing in the Winner’s Circle after Jerry won his last Belmont on Empire Maker,  and being rain drenched.  I have to admit, we were sooooo excited it didn’t matter.  🙂

Royal Ascot

The Royal Meeting at Ascot is where you don’t hold back at all when it comes to STYLN!

I was amazed at how not only the women but the men

show up to this historical event looking FABULOUS!

There are fashion rules that must be abided at this meet,

especially if you are fortunate to get to sit in the Royal Enclosure.

Below are a few of the Fashion Rules to help you pack,

and not look like a Yankee!

And don’t forget the weather can be cool and rainy!

Welcome Spring!  And a special welcome to all of the bright happy colors that accompany this beautiful season!  From soft pastels to bright primary yellows and blues, it’s time to give those dark colors of winter some time off, (even you New York city girls), and add some new life to your wardrobe!  Spring 2017 fashion is all about color, stripes, shoulder-baring dresses and tops, and lots of ruffles.

There is no better place to show off the styles of this season than Louisville Kentucky on the first Saturday in May, or throughout the entire Thoroughbred Horse Racing  Summer Season.   Since 1875, fashion has been a major focus for both men and women at the Kentucky Derby, the first jewel of the Triple Crown.  Though you will see a rainbow of colors on both men and women all weekend long, the primary color on Friday is pink, in honor of PINK OUT, and the fight against Breast and Ovarian Cancer, and Pastels on Saturday with the main focus being on your fabulous hat!

You’ll see pale yellows, 50 shades of blue, lavender and pink on display on both men and women.   But your statement piece on both days is your show stopping hat!  From large floppy hats to fascinators, you will see a vast variety of styles on display.  So when choosing your weekend Derby Style, start with the hat, and everything else is secondary.

Not sure where to purchase your hat?  My suggestion…downtown Louisville.  Many of the local hotels like the Hyatt on 4th, or The Brown, or the Seelbach Hilton, have millenary boutiques set up in their lobbies.  You can either choose from their large assortment of gorgeous hats and fascinators they have on display, or bring your own hat, and allow them to work their magic and turn your ordinary hat into a masterpiece that matches your outfit!  That’s what I did last year…as you can see in pictures below…and plan on doing the same this year.  Just remember that you are going to have to get that beauty back home.  If you don’t have a hat box or bag for airline travel, the hotel will ship your hat home for you.

As for the rest of your outfit…just remember to keep it classy, comfortable, and cool since the weather can very warm on occasion.  And since it’s spring, check the weather for possible showers or cool weather. ( I also bring a pair of flip-flops or flats in my purse to rescue my aching feet after a long day in heels.)

DERBY STYLE 2017!

The Kentucky Derby Celebration has turned into a 3-day weekend event.   But for the traditionalist…Friday and Saturday are the stand out days.  Friday’s Kentucky Oaks is the Derby for 3-year-old Fillies.  And we all know what Saturday is…even though there are lots of great Stake races all day long!  On Friday, everyone is asked to wear some shade of Pink to show your support in the fight against breast and ovarian cancer.

My Pink Oaks Day outfit last year…

Here are some other shades of pink options for Friday…

A simple hat like this Eric Javits can be transformed to match this dress

by those amazing Ladies at the Hyatt!

Men…Don’t forget your touch of Pink too!

Men

The Kentucky Derby provides a splendid excuse for men to get just as dressed up and decked out as the ladies! The modern Derby man possesses an unparalleled color palette. Sun-drenched, tropical colors in bold stripes or busy plaid and bright pastels steal the limelight. Although, if you want a more polished look, a classic navy or seersucker blazer is always in style.Starting with the pants because it is the eye-catcher from a distance, gents should turn to sun-drenched pants in vibrant colors like Key Lime, Ocean, Bermuda Pink, and Citron. Any one of these colors paired with the right shirt and blazer will make you stand out like no one else.

Now that you have the pants you know that you’re going to have some fun with the shirts. A great dress shirt in a complimentary color will go a long way. Don’t be afraid to grab a fun gingham or striped shirt to turn it up. This is the one day of the year that more is better. One option that is a must for some is the monogram on the shirt!

The jacket is what brings everything together and you can’t go wrong with the classic navy blazer. If you want to have a little fun on top though, a nice chalk stripe can really make the ladies’ big hats turn. As far as 2- button or 3-button it’s a person preference but we recommend sporting the 3- button side vent for a more polished look.

Next is the tie. Most gentlemen wear a necktie, but a bow tie is always a great option. If you never wear bows, try it out and you may like it. As the official style for the Kentucky Derby, Vineyard Vines offers an assortment of Derby-themed ties and bowties that will make every man look dapper and distinguished.

For shoes, there are many types of horse bit loafers out there and everyone has their idea of who makes the best ones. The most important thing you need to know is that they should be worn sockless.

Top it all off with a fedora or bowler hat for the complete Kentucky Derby look. Men’s Derby hats are generally solid in color and inspired by the style from the 1920s.

Now you are ready to throw back some bourbon and tie on a bowtie. The most important thing about your Derby outfit for men is to be confident. No matter what you wear, it’s how you wear it gentlemen.

Derby Day!

11 FASHION TIPS TO FLATTER ANY BODY TYPE

Whether you’re curvy, boyish, petite, or full-figured,…

these tricks will help you look your best both at the office and when stepping out for the evening.

By Harper’s Bazaar Staff

Curvy:

All Eyes on the Waist  Feminine clothes that enhance the hourglass are always flattering.

Go trim. To accentuate your figure, wear formfitting dresses and skirts that are cut diagonally or on the bias. They should nip in at the waist, hug the hips, and fall loosely over the thighs and calves.
Try it tailored. A-line shapes will downplay your lower half. Choose structured pieces with flare that isn’t too dramatic; an exaggerated trapeze shape won’t do you any favors. Whatever you wear on top, make sure it’s slim and cut close to the body to best balance a fuller-cut lower half.

Work the middle. Your waist should always be well defined. A cinched-in middle never fails to flatter; it highlights your womanly figure. Wear a belt or choose pieces with details like beading or ruching at the waist.

Select solid shades and color-blocking. A tonal look proves to be a winning choice. Black is always flattering, but that doesn’t mean color should be avoided. Add bits of brights in the right places, mix and match solid, and avoid eye-popping patterns. Simple shades like neutral brown, black, and navy look best.

Show (a Little) Skin at Night  Be tactical about where it is revealed. A slit on the side of a gown can be sexy and slimming, while showing lots of leg offers a long, lean look. Highlighting your décolletage also looks sultry without being too provocative.

Fuller Figured:

Screen Shot 2013-09-07 at 8.48.49 PM

Try Draping – Consider simplicity, subtle sexiness, and a little structure.

Don draping shapes. While a structured look always works, pliable fabrics like jersey can be your best friend. You can wrap, twist, and gather a soft, stretchy fabric around your body so it highlights some parts and hides others.

 Tailored Looks for Daytime

Choose close-to-the-body cuts. Caftans and sack or boxy shapes will only add pounds. Look for tailored pieces like fitted button-ups, straight skirts and trousers, and wrap dresses that skim the body and give the waist definition.

Keep it streamlined. Your clothes should be sleek — frill free and not overly adorned. Think flat-front skirts and pants, as heavy pleats and too much volume look extra-bulky. Pick tops that are relatively simple, without layers of ruffles and embellishment.

Solid Colors for Evening

Solid hues in lights or darks will serve you well. But don’t avoid brights altogether. A rich red is always striking; ditto lush jewel tones. Big prints aren’t best, so go monochromatic to create the slimmest line, or wear simple, contrasting shades like black and white.

Boyish:

Screen Shot 2013-09-07 at 8.54.26 PM

Trick the Eye with Details

The key is to create womanly curves and definition.
Enhance your figure. To transform your slender physique into a more curvy shape, accentuate your middle and create the illusion of a fuller bust and hips. That means always define the waist, whether it’s with a dress that cinches, a top with a drop waist, or a gown with a distinct Empire line. V-necks emphasize cleavage.
Trick the eye with details. Accents like wide belts, ruching, and plays on color will give a touch more roundness to your shape. The same goes for a mix of textures: A combination of fabrics like lace, satin, velvet, cotton, and wool adds complexity to any silhouette.

Add Feminine Flourishes

Pieces with pleats, poufs, and peplums add ladylike definition. The same goes for anything with adornment. Ruffles, beading, and bows all offer a feminine boost to your figure. Balance anything with a lot of personality or dimension by pairing it with something more streamlined.

Play Up the Prints–

Don’t shy away from bold and intricate patterns.  Florals, stripes, and graphics will give depth and character to a silhouette, but remember to keep it in check.  Choose refined motifs in classic colors to keep from going overboard.

PETITE:

Screen Shot 2013-09-07 at 8.55.17 PM

Select Solids for Daytime

Keep your look sleek and chic, and avoid very busy prints.  You don’t want to get lost in a loud pattern.  Mixing solids works, and subltle details can add personality, but stay away from things, like overly ornate embellishment that will detract from your figure.

Try Textures at Night

Plush fabrics like brocade, blevet, silk, lace and chiffon can add character and fullness in the right places and combining different fabrics will increase the richness of your look.  Shun lots of layers however, because your petite figure will look too loaded down.  When in doubt at three-inch heels!

BLAZER BUYING TIPS…

Find the Perfect Jacket for You

If You’re Curvy

LOOK FOR… A semifitted style that hits at the point where the hips start to curve out or that just covers the derriere. Belted styles are also flattering.
AVOID… Cropped shapes and styles that button up to the neck. DON’T FORGET… • Always choose single-breasted styles. • Look for a closure right below the bustline. •
Keep lines simple. • Opt for narrow, not exaggerated, lapels.

If You Have a Boyish Frame

LOOK FOR… A fitted, mid-hip length nipped in at the waist. Belted styles are good options.
AVOID… Anything square or overly boxy. DON’T FORGET… • Try a peplum style, which creates an hourglass silhouette.

If You Have Narrow Shoulders

LOOK FOR… Cuts with defined, tailored (not soft) shoulders.    AVOID… Dropped sleeves and seams that start before the edge of your shoulder.
DON’T FORGET… • Peaked shoulders or other details such as epaulets give your shoulders more structure.
• Choose sleeves with seams at the edge or slightly beyond your shoulder line. • Small shoulder pads can be a plus.

If You Have Broad Shoulders

LOOK FOR… Longer styles and soft, unstructured jackets that help de-emphasize the shoulders.
AVOID… Anything that is fitted around or emphasizes the shoulders, such as large breasted styles, breast pockets, epaulets or shoulder details.
DON’T FORGET… • Try deep armholes and raglan, kimono or dropped sleeves to soften shoulders. • Choose V-necks, small lapels, shawl collars and single-breasted styles.
• If your hips are narrow, try patch pockets to balance your shoulders.

If You Have a Small Bust

LOOK FOR… Fitted jackets nipped in at the waist. Try double-breasted or belted styles.
Shrunken jackets that fit right below the waist are great for slim silhouettes.
AVOID… Jackets with a covered placket.
DON’T FORGET… •Use draping, breast pockets, seams and shirring to enhance a smaller bustline.
•High necklines offer chic options. •Select jackets with feminine details such as puffy or bracelet sleeves.

If You’re Short

LOOK FOR… Shorter, clean, cropped and/or fitted styles.

AVOID… Long jackets, double-breasted styles and excessive details.

DON’T FORGET… • Cropped jackets emphasize your waist. • Always choose single-breasted styles. • Opt for one- or two-button closures.

• Look for jackets with narrow lapels that end above your natural waist.

LOOK FOR A GOOD FIT

White jeans can be a little less forgiving than other shades of denim,

so it’s really important that you find a pair of jeans that fit and flatter.

Make sure the jeans aren’t too tight, too loose or too see-through.

For this reason, make sure you’re wearing nude-colored undergarments when shopping for white jeans

so you’ll have the best idea of how much coverage they give.

You’ll want to pay special attention to your backside and to make sure the thigh area doesn’t bunch and crinkle.

If you’re having a hard time finding your perfect jean size, experiment by trying on a few pairs.

Sometimes, it can be hard to find a pair of white jeans that aren’t transparent and fit just right,

but there are many options out there to try.

Screen Shot 2013-07-02 at 3.02.13 PM

If You Have a Straight Figure

What to look for: A trim fit to play up any curves you do have.

Bold embellishment on the back pockets, like contrast stitching, studs, or a flap, make a flat bum look perkier.

What to avoid: Exaggerated bells and flares that look unbalanced on a ruler-straight frame.

What to pair them with: “A blouse with ruching or draping to add more volume

and shapeliness up top,” says Sarah Hodge, a fit expert withMytruefit.com, an online fit predictor and store.

Screen Shot 2013-07-02 at 2.58.43 PM

If You Have an Hourglass Figure

What to look for: A contoured waistband, which is nipped in at the waist instead of cut straight across.

“This allows the jeans to fit the hips without gaping at the waist,” says Janine Chilton-Faust,

vice president of women’s design for Levi’s. (One pair to try is J. Crew’s Matchstick jeans, $115, jcrew.

These not-too-skinny straight-leg jeans help balance a curvy figure.)

What to avoid: A straight-cut waistband, which will be too loose around the middle.

Wide-leg styles will make this body look boyish.

What to pair them with: Curve-hugging tops to show off the feminine proportions of this figure.

Screen Shot 2013-07-02 at 2.56.46 PM

If You Have a Tummy

What to look for: “A slightly higher rise—eight inches or more—

to reduce the chance of muffin top,” says Rosella Giuliani,

vice president of design and merchandising for 7 for All Mankind.

What to avoid: Anything without stretch that will dig into your stomach

and make sitting and bending uncomfortable.

What to pair them with: “A lightweight Empire-waist top

that is loose enough to skim the body yet not

so billowy that it emphasizes the tummy,” says Giuliani.

macys.com 02/01/2010-ongoing

  • Rule #1! Embrace your curves and look for styles that flatter them.
  • Styles with a stretch fabric will help to contour your hips, thighs, and butt. Avoid jeans that fit too tight at the waist or styles that cut you off tightly at the ankles. This will add volume to your thighs and hips. Instead look for styles that have extra room in the hips and thighs. And pay attention to how the jeans fit your waist. They shouldn’t be a gap between the waist and lower back. The waist should be fitted but should not pinch or be too tight.
  • “Gals with a curvy figure should opt for boot cut or flared styles so that the flared bottom balances the mid-section,” says Paige Adams-Geller of Paige Denim.

macys.com 02/01/2010-ongoing

  • There are lots of options if you are petite thanks to one of the biggest denim trends for spring, the “skinny cropped” cut. This style would fit like a cropped jean on a taller figure, but is full length and a great fit on a petite frame.
  • If you are looking for a different style, here are some other things to keep in mind: Choose jeans with a 29 or 30 inch inseam. This will prevent a trip to the tailor. If you are petite and curvy, avoid skinny styles that cut you off at the ankle, making you appear shorter and heavier. If you are petite and slim avoid baggy styles that will drown you and make you appear heavier. If you choose a style that is baggier make sure you add a pair of high heels.
  • “There is much more to a perfectly fitting petite jean than just a shorter inseam,” says Rosella Giuliani,VP of Merchandising & Design at 7 For All Mankind. “We specifically design all our petite “Lexie” jeans to flatter and enhance a petite woman’s figure. Some feature a lower rise and pitch, along with a shorter inseam, while the traditional wide leg elongates and extends the legs. White thread and stonewashed silver hardware keep this wash looking polished.”

macys.com Evergreen Promos

  • Tall women can rest easy that there are jeans out there to fit their proportions and flatter long legs.
  • Look for 34 inch or longer inseam, but also pay attention to fit. If you are tall and slim, opt for jeans that hug your legs and thighs and avoid excess fabric that will sag, especially around the butt.
  • “Taller women should make sure to get jeans at the right length, there is truly nothing worse than a jean that is too short,” says Adams-Geller. “Many companies now offer tall jeans with a longer inseam.”
  • If you are tall and curvy look for styles that balance out your proportion, a boot-cut or flare will help create an even long lean look. Trouser jeans are also highly recommended for taller women.

  • Plus-size women should always remember to stick with clean white fabrics that are not see through. Choose fabrics that provide support and hold you in, so that your curves will be contoured and any imperfections will be covered.
  • NOT YOUR DAUGHTER’S JEANS  and Miraclebody are  companies that have developed special fabrics and technologies to provide extra support around the usual problem areas (i.e. hips, tummy and thighs).
  • Old Navy is another brand that designs with a plus-sized girl in mind. “The fit through hip and thigh is nice and snug, with a flare bottom opening to help balance her overall figure,” says Marita Aikonen, Director of Design. “Also, the details in the front are very clean, so no bulk is added. Add a nice heel and the silhouette becomes longer and leaner.”

If You Have Full Hips and Thighs

What to look for: A pair with a higher rise in the back than in the front and a contoured waistband that will accommodate your curves. “This prevents the jeans from sliding down and overexposing you,” says Hodge.

What to avoid: Very tapered legs that magnify wider hips.

What to pair them with: “A long top with a shirttail hem to help minimize the thighs,” says Chilton-Faust.

  • If You Have an Hourglass Figure
  •
  • What to look for: A contoured waistband, which is nipped in at the waist instead of cut straight across. “This allows the jeans to fit the hips without gaping at the waist,” says Janine Chilton-Faust, vice president of women’s design for Levi’s. • What to avoid: A straight-cut waistband, which will be too loose around the middle. Wide-leg styles will make this body look boyish.

What to pair them with: Curve-hugging tops to show off the feminine proportions of this figure.

Always make sure the fabric is not too thin, as thinner white denim may show imperfections you don’t want seen,” says ANLO jeans designer Jenna Andreola about her overall shopping strategy. “A heavier denim will hold you in better and hide body flaws.””Also, undergarments are super important when wearing white denim. You should never wear white underwear under white denim, a nude shade works best to conceal your undergarments.”

How to Keep Your Pair of Jeans Pristine

1. Before the first wear, spray all over with Scotchgard to ward off stains.

2. Be careful about pairing your jeans with a dark indigo jacket or a bright canvas handbag. Dyes may rub off on the white denim.

3. Wear just once or twice between washings. Overwearing without laundering causes a grayish tint.

4. Wash with other whites in warm water. Don’t overload the machine, since that can keep garments from rinsing thoroughly, and detergent residue can lead to yellowing.

5. If the jeans are still dingy after washing, soak them in warm water with a capful of color-safe bleach for 30 minutes.

  • SOOO MANY STYLES
  • One of the best parts about the white jean trend is that it’s available and looks great in virtually every jean style.
  • If you aren’t comfortable or unsure of how to wear skinny jeans,
  • you can pick a pair with a bootcut opening. White jeans also look great in wide leg cuts;
  • for this look, try a tucked-in blouse, skinny belt and some summer wedges.

Because white jeans are literally lacking color, they look especially great when you can bring in pops of colors.

Whether it’s your top, shoes or even your clutch, bright colors are a great way to get that summer look.

White jeans also look especially great when paired with colored or gold accessories.

They’re a great way to bring attention to your outfit, even if you’ve chosen to pair your white jeans with light-colored tops

How to Keep Your Pair of Jeans Pristine

AT SOME OF OUR FAVORITE SITES!

Don’t overload the machine, since that can keep garments from rinsing thoroughly,

and detergent residue can lead to yellowing.

5. If the jeans are still dingy after washing, soak them in warm water with a capful of color-safe bleach for 30 minutes.
