EQUINE ASSISTED THERAPIES

OF SOUTH FLORIDA

=

Equine-Assisted Therapies of South Florida, Inc. was founded in 1982 by Soroptimist International of Boca Raton and the Kiwanis Club of Boca Raton.

The organization began as a community project of the Soroptimist women. What was first thought as ‘too physical’ for a group of women, soon developed into a fully functioning program with the help of the Kiwanis Club of Boca and several other members of the local community. The program began serving 6 special needs children with 6 borrowed horses in a public field in Palm Beach County.

Beginning as Horses and the Handicapped of South Palm Beach County in 1982, the organization and its stewards have remained vigilant to the ever-changing special needs community and societal changes.

Today, the organization has grown to serve over 118 children and adults with special needs through 4 programs, including: Therapeutic Riding, Hippotherapy, Equine-Facilitated Learning and Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy, which includes a Wounded Warrior Program.

Equine-Assisted Therapies owns 11 horses and, oversees 2.5 acres of land, a covered arena and a 12 stall barn. The organization will continue to grow in the future with an extra 3 acres of land from Broward County Parks and Recreation.

By looking back, we are proud to move forward, envisioning a place where abilities are strengthened, where activities lead to self-confidence, and each person can experience life without limits.  READ MORE>>

CHILDREN’S AID CLUB

How You Can Help…
In 1955, a group of ladies in Fort Lauderdale founded Children’s Aid Club to help underprivileged children in their community. For over fifty nine years, Children’s Aid Club has been quietly meeting the needs of children in South Florida. Yes, there are many public and private programs that assist the needy in very significant ways, but CAC is nimble, flexible, and able to meet urgent short-term critical situations in a timely fashion. CAC is an all-volunteer organization with no overhead costs.

Back to Basics Beginnings

Many children and families cannot afford the basics of sneakers, socks and underwear.
A new uniform gives a child the confidence to go to school and be ready to learn.
It is important for kids to feel comfortable in school.

Having a new uniform, sneakers, socks and underwear helps them socially,
as well as academically because they are not worried that their shirt doesn’t fit,
or they aren’t in uniform.
They want to follow the rules, they want to do what’s right,
they want to wear a uniform. It helps them focus on their
school work when they don’t have to worry about those things.
Our Mission
The mission of Back to Basics is to
raise children’s self-esteem,
keep kids in school,
enable self-sufficiency and
invest in our future; all by
providing NEW uniforms,
sneakers, socks and underwear…
Back to Basics is an all volunteer organization,
with 100% of the money raised going directly to the programs.

Belmont Child Care Association
ANNA HOUSE

/

Our History

The BCCA was established in December 1998 to create a child care center at Belmont Park, which hosts the largest population of backstretch workers of the New York Racing Association’s, Inc. three racetracks. The purpose of the BCCA was to build a child care center, select an independent, licensed child care provider to operate the center, and undertake fundraising efforts to ensure the continued operation of the center. The BCCA provides backstretch families with access to high quality, state-of-the-art child care that enhances the emotional, social, and educational development of their children.

In 2002, Michael Dubb, BCCA Board Chairman, built Anna House and donated it to the BCCA to serve the families of the backstretch. The center was named Anna House in appreciation of Eugene Melnyk, a major donor, whose daughter, Anna, was then two years old. In January 2010, Michael Dubb generously offered to add two extensions to Anna House to meet the needs of our families. The playground area is named the Lemon Drop Kid Playground in honor of donors Jeanne Vance and Laddie Dance’s 1999 Belmont Stakes winner.

Anna House opened its doors on January 1, 2003. Located at Gate 6 at Belmont Park, in Elmont, New York, it is accessible to the backstretch employees at both Belmont and Aqueduct racetracks. The majority of the backstretch employees are immigrants, struggling to make a living and supporting their families. Anna House was created to care for children from the age of six weeks to six years old, providing a safe and nurturing environment for learning. Backstretch families require affordable child care that is available before dawn, and before the creation of Anna House, their options were few.

In December 2006, Gretchen and Roy Jackson created the Lael Scholarship Fund to ensure that Anna House would always have sufficient funds to continue to provide early childhood education to the children. The Jacksons make a generous annual contribution to the fund.

Anna House is open from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m., seven days a week, 365 days a year, to accommodate the racetrack employees and their work schedule. READ MORE>>
